The Basics of Adult Learning
The Basics of Adult Learning Do you remember what it was like to sit in a classroom? Rows of desks and chairs faced the teacher at the front of the room. Your job as a student was to be quiet, listen to the teacher, and do what you were told. This is an example of teacher-centered learning, usually involving children, called pedagogy. Adult Learning Adult learners have a different approach to learning. By the time you reach adulthood, youââ¬â¢re most likely responsible for your own success and youââ¬â¢re perfectly capable of making your own decisions once you have the information you need. Adults learn best when learning is focused on adult students, not on the teacher. This is called andragogy, the process of helping adults learn. The Differences Malcolm Knowles, a pioneer in the study of adult learning, observed that adults learn best when: They understand why something is important to know or do.They have the freedom to learn in their own way.Learning is experiential.ââ¬â¹The time is right for them to learn. The process is positive and encouraging. Continuing Education Continuing education is a broad term. In the most general sense, any time you return to a classroom of any kind to learn something new, you are continuing your education. As you can imagine, this encompasses everything from graduate degrees to listening to personal development CDs in your car. Common types of continuing education: Earning a GED, the equivalent of a high school diplomaPost-secondary degrees such as a bachelorââ¬â¢s, or graduate degrees such as a masterââ¬â¢s or doctorateProfessional certificationOn-the-job trainingEnglish as a second languagePersonal development Where It All Happens The methods involved in achieving continuing education are just as diverse. Your school can be a traditional classroom or a conference center near a beach. You might start before dawn or study after a day of work. Programs can take months, even years, to complete, or last just a few hours. Your job can depend on completion, and sometimes, your happiness. Continuous learning, no matter how old you are, has clear benefits, from finding and keeping the job of your dreams to remaining fully engaged in life in your later years. Itââ¬â¢s never too late. Should You Go Back to School? So what is it you want to learn or achieve? Have you been meaning to go back to school to earn your GED? Your bachelorââ¬â¢s degree? Is your professional certificate in danger of expiring? Do you feel the urge to grow personally, learn a new hobby, or advance in your company? Keeping in mind how adult learning differs from your childhood schooling, ask yourself some questions: Why am I thinking about school lately? What exactly do I want to achieve? Can I afford it?Can I afford not to?Is this the right time in my life?Do I have the discipline and the freedom right now to study? Can I find the right school, the one that will help me learn the way I learn best? How much encouragement will I need and can I get it? Itââ¬â¢s a lot to think about, but remember, if you really want something, youââ¬â¢re likely capable of making it happen. And there are a lot of people available to help you.

Economics Forecast Paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Economics Forecast Paper - Essay Example Adjustable home loan rates have attracted more consumers. The risk involved in the possibility of increases in interest / repayment obligations which was not realized by the consumers, is now being driven home literally. The crisis got deepened due to the unregulated growth of derivative markets for mortgage loans, which has now impacted everyone ââ¬â the consumers, the financial institutions, the industry and the national economy as a whole. As can be seen, the rates remained high during 1995 ââ¬â 2000 and started declining from 2001 to 2004 but again started firming up from 2005 onwards. Increase/decrease in the bank prime rate has corresponding impact on commercial lending in the economy. This period coincided with the decline in the number of housing starts both nationally and in California, which in the later area reduced from 1 million plus to just about 200,000 during the above period. In view of the serious crisis in the mortgage and financial industries, and in order to avoid the lurking fears of recession, one can forecast that the bank rates across the sectors will soften in the short to medium term period, as already confirmed by the 25 basis points cut announced by the FED this week. This policy approach will help to stabilize the home loan industry and at the same time impact the national economy positively. Budget deficit is the gap between the planned spending and revenues of the government for a given financial year (It becomes a surplus if the revenue exceeds the spending). The higher the government spending, the higher is the economic activity and vice versa. However, pumping too much money into the system, without creating corresponding products or services, will stoke inflationary trends and can lead to a decline in consumer spending and hence, a decline in the demand. A delicate balance is maintained to help economic growth without raising

Review Essay Water for Gotham a History, by Gerard Koeppel
Review Water for Gotham a History, by Gerard Koeppel - Essay Example A seemingly "drab" topic has been successfully converted into a captivating read, which is a creditable, wondrous achievement. This thesis, which the author puts forward, is very well-supported throughout the entire book. The author opens the book with a gory description of the Asiatic cholera which struck New York in 1800, leaving scores dead with each passing day. The author takes into account every single detail of the epidemic - including how it originated in India, how it spread to the west through trade routes, and how helpless doctors and authorities felt. The opening chapter of the book, which is "Give us Cold Water" deals with the epidemic itself. The chapter starts with the description of how a healthy family - the Fitzgeralds - who had emigrated from Canada to New York, succumbed to cholera and disappeared among the faceless, countless millions who had died, gasping for water, in a similar fashion. The author recounts many incidents in the book, some of which are his own personal anecdotes. Apart from those, the author also draws upon primary sources, such as the Cholera Bulletin, The Description of the Canals and railroads of the United States, and The Edinburgh Encyclopedia, among others. The author's extensive research is reflected in his vast bibliography, his steady flow of thoughts, and his step-by-step account of how New Yorkers were suffering at that time. After filling the reader's mind with an unimaginable New York, the author reveals the vitality of the situation. Manhattan was surrounded by Salty water on all sides, and there was not a drop of fresh water available to the residents. Such a difficult situation aggravated the situation even more, as New Yorkers could not access fresh, clean water - which is as essential for survival as a whiff of fresh air. It was in 1832, the author says, that cholera was first thought of as a possible waterborne disease. Doctors who were working overtime to grasp the situation now focused on the issue of fresh water and stressed the importance of hygiene. It was only then that New Yorkers realized the vital importance of the presence of fresh water, and devised upon ways to access the same. It may be worth mentioning here that the author has, apart from researching a very difficult topic, has done everything to make it exciting. The book has all the prerequisites of a novel - a scheming corporate monopoly, a suffering public, and the triumph of the public in the end - which makes the book an inspiring read as well. The author reveals, in due course, how the Manhattan Company, found in 1799 by Aaron Burr and other prominent New Yorkers, controlled the waterworks industry for an overwhelming forty years - and recounts how the public's suffering became aggravated due to its helplessness. The Manhattan Company, which owed its social responsibility, had to come up with solutions for the sorry situation. After many hiccups and problems - which are very well documented by the author - the Company came up with a

Child Obesity Essay Example for Free
Child Obesity Essay Whoââ¬â¢s To Blame for Obesity? Do you want to be surrounded with a society filled with obese children? Obesity has become a big problem in America. Parents are not being careful with the amount of junk food theyââ¬â¢re allowing their kids to take in. According to Daniel Wientraubââ¬â¢s article ââ¬Å"The Battle Against Fast Food Begins in the Homeâ⬠, he claims that parents are in the position to fight the epidemic of overweight children, not the government or fast food companies. I agree with Daniel Wientraub because parents should be held accountable for the obesity of their children. Advertising has become Americas biggest tool for manipulating kids in the U.S as indicated in David Barbozaââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"If you Pitch It, They Will Eat Itâ⬠, New York Times article , professor Linn of Harvard says ââ¬Å"The programs have become advertising for the food and the food has become advertising for the programs (Barboza,P.39,Par.33).â⬠Children are getting attached to television and programming, which is where the fast food commercials vastly appear. For example, kids begin to ask their parents for fast food just because there happens to be a toy in their ââ¬Å"Happy Mealâ⬠. Parents donââ¬â¢t have the strength needed to continue managing on telling their children ââ¬Å"No!â⬠because they will cry, nag, and proceed to bug their parents to take them. Marketing strategies aim on manipulating kids, and the more being targeted, the more money they continue making. Parents need to start saying ââ¬Å"No!â⬠and begin acting like the boss, instead of it being the other way around. Exercising is a huge factor on staying healthy. A vastly amount of kids in America are not participating in physical education. In the article ââ¬Å"The Battle Against Fast Food Begins in the Homeâ⬠Daniel Weintraub indicates ââ¬Å"We limit television and encourage our boys to get out the house, either to participate in organized sports or to ride their bikes, skateboards, or roller blades(Weintraub,P.43,Par.15).â⬠This particularly indicates that parents need to push and motivate their children to exercise daily, to remain active. Staying fit is more important because it prevents obesity. The majority of children lack exercise and stuff themselves with fast food but it isnââ¬â¢t their fault because their too young to comprehend any better. Parents need to step it up and provide their kids with consistent physical education to prevent their children becoming obese. Adolescents need to start noticing what they are feeding their children. A great amount of food comes from the home kids are living in. in Daniel Wientraubââ¬â¢sà article ââ¬Å"The Battle Against Fast Food Begins in the Homeâ⬠, he states that, ââ¬Å"We try to cook as many meals as possible on the theory that even the last healthy home cooked meal is probably better for our children than the healthiest fast food serving (Weintraub, P.43, Par.15).â⬠I support this claim because when kids are given a meal at home, their parent can provide and control the ingredients they are feeding them, in contrast to when they are eating out. Therefore, kids can consume vegetables and healthy edibles that their parents are serving at home, without worrying about the bad factors that fast food is giving them. In other words, cooking at home is a veritable good way for parents preventing obesity. Others may suggest that fast food services are at fault for childhood obesity. However, I believe this is faulty reasoning because fast food places provide a great amount of high fattening food that makes kids gain weight. Support of my position can be found in the following ââ¬Å"Fast foods marketing strategies, which make perfect sense from a business perspective, succeed only when they induce a substantial number of us to overeat (Brownie, P.33, Par.6).â⬠This clearly substantiates my position by illustrating that purchasing fast food products may be cheap and less time consuming, but it is a bad decision for parents to make on their children. In conclusion, I am adamant that parents are responsible for what they feed their kids. As such, in my opinion it would be in our best interest for parents to stand up and help children at most they can. If parents follow this course of action, I am confident that child obesity will decrease not only in America, but all over the world.

l.a confidential film noir :: essays research papers
The Key Conventions Of Film Noir In L.A Confidential L.A Confidential (Curtis Hanson, 1997) is a neo-noir film about a shooting at an all night diner and the three Las Angeles policeman who investigate in their own unique ways. It is based on the book by James Ellroy and after a very well adapted screenplay, won nine academy awards. It starred actors with big names like Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce and Danny Devito, which made it a very high earning film. The Narrative or storyline is much the same as any other film noir movie. It has a ââ¬Ëhard boiledââ¬â¢ cop (Russell Crowe) who we grow attached to. The narrative of any film must have certain ââ¬Ëkey conventionsââ¬â¢ which are apparent for the audience to tell the genre of the film. The narrative can be used to provide an explanation as to why the film contains certain things, or why a character does something. The genre of the film is how we know what kind of film it is. Genre is a French word which literally means type; it shows what category a film comes under. There are certain factors in a genre which will identify it. Things like settings, characters and themes can all be similar in one specific genre. ââ¬ËL.A Confidential is in the film noir genre. Other films in this genre are ââ¬ËThe Big Sleepââ¬â¢, ââ¬ËThe Maltese Falconââ¬â¢ and ââ¬ËDouble Indemnityââ¬â¢. Lighting is very important in film noir. It uses techniques such as chiaroscuro to give the film a darker, more obscured feel. The characters are often similar in film noir. The main protagonist is always some hard boiled cop or investigator who doesnââ¬â¢t always play by the book to get his desired results. There is often a femme fatale; a very pretty woman with whom the main protagonist has a love interest. There will always be bad guys who will try and stop the main protagonist from completing the case. In L.A Confidential Danny Devito narrates. A narrator is quite common in noir films. The purpose of a narrator is to explain, to the audience, parts of the film which cannot be explained by conversation on screen or visually. A voice over is non- diagetic which means that we can hear it but it is not apparently coming from anywhere on screen. Danny Devito is perfect in this role because he has quite a seedy voice this is good to illustrate the sleaziness of film-noir, it shows the real voice of L.

How Did the Europeans Affect the Native Americans? Essay
Anne Bradstreet Jonathan Edwards and Anne Bradstreet were both famous Puritan writers of their time. Each of their works, ââ¬Å"Sinners in the Hands of an Angry Godâ⬠and â⬠Upon the Burning of Our Houseâ⬠convey to their audiences the strong religious beliefs prevalent during that time period. Edwards writes to persuade his audience. On the other hand, Bradstreet writes to inform her audience. Edwards mainly talks about hell and damnation in his writings, however Bradstreet talks about heaven and hope. Although both Edwards and Bradstreet have similar outlooks and understandings of religious beliefs and attitudes and beliefs about human life, there are also distinctions that allow the reader to better understand each authorââ¬â¢s purpose. Bradstreet believes that one should look to God and pray during times of hardship. On the other hand Edwards believes that one should always look God, but not in times of hardship, he thinks people must let God come to them. Bradstreet expresses her needing of help from God after her house burns down when she said, ââ¬Å"Raise up thy thoughts above the skyâ⬠(Bradstreet41). Referring to this quote Bradstreet looks up to God for help while she is in the middle of a crisis or hardship. Edwards suggests that people should let God come to them when he said, ââ¬Å"And now you have an extraordinary opportunity, a day where in Christ has thrown the door of mercy wide Motahari 2 open, and stands in the door calling and crying with a loud voice to poor sinnersâ⬠(Edwards129). According to this quote Edwards is saying that God has finally come to the sinners in their time of need. Not only are Bradstreetââ¬â¢s and Edwardsââ¬â¢s religious beliefs different, but they also have different attitudes and beliefs. Bradstreet is a positive woman who believes that everyone is going to heaven, on the other hand Edwards is a negative man who believes that everyone is going to hell. Bradstreet expresses her positivity and belief for heaven after her house burns down while saying, ââ¬Å"The world no longer let me love, my hope and treasure lies aboveâ⬠(Bradstreet119). This reveals that that she will always believe something good will happen. Even though her house and all of her things burned to ash, she still is happy that she has another home that lies above [heaven]. Edwards show his negativity towards people when he said, ââ¬Å"In short, they have no refuge, nothing to take hold ofâ⬠(Edwards126). Referring to this quote Edwards is trying to say that people do not have any escape from hell and damnation, also that there is nothing worth living for. Bradstreet and Edwards do not have the same views in the categories of religious beliefs and attitudes and beliefs of human life. Through her writings, Bradstreet explains that God is a kind loving person who is always there for us. However Edwards portrays God as a mean and angry person through his writings. I think that Bradstreet has a better view of God.
