Hemingway also places a responsibility of dodging dead on the shoulders of the hero. Since the hero doesn’t have anything, but his life he will try to avoid death, but the Hemingway reader will notice how the hero is always placed near death. Hemingway confronts his characters with death, but the character doesn’t seem afraid. That would be cowardice, a feeling which isn’t a part of the code. In the stories the hero himself believes in â€Å"nada†, a Spanish word for nothing. This means that hero doesn’t have any clear goal, but just lives as the day comes along. Also the code hero is quite a natural at whatever he’s doing. The code hero will never compromise with anything mediocre, neither will they allow mediocre people to be in midst. Farewell to arms The main character is the young ambulance driver Henry. When we’re first introduced to Henry he’s living completely by the nada concept, but is far from a code hero. He lies with all kind of women and he’s a heavy drinker. Then he meets the lovely British nurse Catherine. For her he leaves all the other women behind, but he still goes to war leaving her behind too. Here Henry experiences death, but he isn’t able to handle it like a true code hero should be. Instead he abandons the army without any morale issues. Once again he gets confronted with death through the execution of his friend the doctor. Once again he just keeps running. He runs to a new American hospital where Catherine gets transferred to. Here Henry becomes more and more of a code hero with help from Catherine. He starts to hold his liquor, he talks about marriage and treat her just. Sadly Henry is to be sent back, so he leaves with Catherine, sailing to Switzerland. In Switzerland Henry and Catherine pretends to be man and wife and get a child together. Once again Henry takes great care of Catherine and shows himself as a man who knows how to treat a woman with respect and honor. Fortunately Catherine gets pregnant, but she’s dies while giving birth and the child doesn’t survive either. Through it all Henry prays to God for God to have mercy on his beloved, but she still dies. This is where Henry becomes a true code hero. He realizes that death is just†¦ Death. That it’s the inevitable end of it all. Up until this point Henry has just been in the making, but when he realizes that there’s just life and then you’re gone he reaches the final level. The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber In this novel we meet Francis Macomber. He’s a wealthy American who’s on safari with his younger and more attractive wife. As all other code heroes Francis masters his occupation and is a very successive business man. This is where he stops mastering things though. His relationship with his wife is close to solely based on his money. Even if he has feelings for her she always makes him fade by criticizing everything he does. This wouldn’t happen for the ideal code hero. Since they’re on a safari Francis are going to shoot some animals, but when hunting Francis hit a lion without killing it. This makes him so ashamed and afraid that he tries to pull out and make the African servants go finish off the lion. This is a very cowardly act by him, very non-code hero like, but his English guide on the other hand knows what to do. He is the code hero at this point. The entire incident were seen by his wife who have even lower thoughts of Francis now, but higher of their and therefore she sleeps with him. Francis discovers this but as the non-heroic person he is he just ignores it. When they go hunting once again Francis manages to shoot and kill the animals properly. Even when he got to go into the bush to hunt down one he didn’t kill. He does it this the 2nd time, but his wife can’t handle it anymore. Having seen him grow from one day to the other she has changed his feeling towards him. She likes Francis the code hero, but unfortunately she gets hold on a rifle and accidentally shoots him in the head. Francis managed to become a code hero in the very last seconds of his life, but is then killed.
